Educational Programs Services

The Education Department at Williamson Memorial Hospital provides orientation to new employees as well as offering a variety of continuing education opportunities for staff and physicians.

Several of the certification courses being taught on campus include:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • International Trauma Life Support (ITLS)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR)
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention Training (CPI)
  • Basic EKG, 12 Lead EKG, and Trauma Nursing Core Course (available in winter 2008)  

Other classes are made available based on requests from staff, physicians, community members, and the annual needs assessment for education.

Our Education Department is certified by the West Virginia Nurses Association to be a provider of continuing education for nurses, and is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC).

The West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care also authorizes the department to provide continuing education for Respiratory Therapists. Other clinical departments can utilize the Health Sciences Television Network (HSTN) online education programs for advancing their clinical knowledge at no cost to them.  

The Education Department maintains a variety of journals and medical publications to ensure the latest information are provided to our staff and physicians.

A few of the publications available are:

  • American Journal of Nursing (AJN)
  • New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM)
  • Registered Nurse (RN), Nursing 2008
  • Online references such as Up-to-Date, Currents, and McKesson Clinical Pharmacology

For patient education we provide online reference materials from McKesson Clinical Advisor. The patient education focus areas are Adult, Pediatrics, Women’s Health, Psychiatry, and Sports Medicine. The program also provides tools/instructions for diagnosis specific conditions and diagnostic testing preparation information.  

Our Education Department is an interactive classroom that provides education in a modern facility that encourages an enjoyable learning experience. The department also participates in community health education activities through various classes, health fairs, and programs presented throughout the Tug Valley area.
